What is the ordinance on keeping Chickens?

Am I allowed to have backyard chickens in SM?

I don't know the ordinance, but I know of several people keeping them.

The ones I have seen are generally out loose, which may be a way around the ordinance (if there is one). Technically, they are not being "kept" anywhere, by anyone.

I've looked up the codes online and you are allowed to keep no more than 8 hens. No roosters.
