Noise at Hills of Hays area

A couple of weeks ago I read in the online version of the San Marcos Daily Record that residents in the Hills of Hays section of the city were quite upset about university students making loud noises at night and giving them insomnia. Where is that area? Has the city government or the university done anything?

That subdivision is just after the High School on 621. I recently talked to a man who lived on Hill Top right in the middle of Hills of Hays, and he was fed up with the noise, but mainly it was the 4 and 5 college kids living in a 3 bedroom house that is zoned single family. But as far as I'm concerned, when you put a 100 familys on lots that are 20' X 50', theres going to be neighbor disputs.
As far as I know the city nor SWT has done or said anything.

If any one else knows more, let us know.

By "High School" I assume you're referring to San Marcos high school. Based on my online maps, that's on the southside of I-35, while the university is on the northside and some distance away. If that's the case, why would so many university students be crowding that place?

Please forgive me for asking some trivial questions. I'm trying to know this place because my wife and I are considering it for our retirement.

That's right, the San Marcos High School. And I'm not sure how to answer your question about why. I know that about 3-4 years ago there where alot of complaints about housing space for the growing SWT. As far as I see, the university/city has only built massive apt. complex, which is not that inviting to every college student. Alot of students flat out refuse to live that way. Their other option is to rent a house and split the rent with as many people as they can stand to live with.
I'm not sure of the exact numbers but students make up like 80% of this towns population. When they come in the spring after summer breaks, you can just tell by traffic, store lines, bar crowds that the kids are back.
I came here for a two week visit and that was like 6 years ago. I fell completly in love with the town, the river, and the people. I bought a house 3 years ago, right in town, and am very happy. Plan to move to the country in a few years, but will always stay close to San Marcos.
If you have any questions dont' hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the useful info. When and if we decide to buy a house here, we'll be sure to grill the real estate agent about where the Animal House crowds congregate and try our best to avoid them. In the meantime, we'll continue to collect info about Austin and SM and then decide where we'll sink our next and maybe final stake.

could be....

It is definatly getting more popular, and many younger aged families are moving in....not just retirees...so they tend to throw parties, events, and invite other family/frriends..the other population is students..why? Well it's 5 min from town, and it s outside the city limits...big plus.

Noise and growth

Yeppers, I'll agree with you that when houses are crammed side by side this tend to raise the chance of people being distrurbed by the next door neighbors and such. I live out behind Aquarena Springs in the country, and have basically called this place home for nearly 20 years despite short living trips to other places - I always return. When we moved out here you couldn't hear or see a soul. No lights from our rooftop, no radios booming from cars, no late night fights broadcast through the valley, just nice & quiet. Last night we crawled up on our rooftop where we've watched the fireworks from for years now, and I was instantly reminded of how solitude is a state of mind. I saw sodium vapor lights on poles illuminating trailers and homes all around, some within a few hundred yards. Even our fifteen acres seems small these days. We still love it, yet, when you find a place that is great to live in...chances are there will be ten other people that feel the same way about that spot and scoot right in there with you. Just cross your fingers they're not bass players or beginner-bagpipe players.
