What is the purpose/function of government?

There's a lot of rhetoric and political name-calling out there; these days much of it is related to the federal/state deficits and economical recovery. Government deficits are the result of revenue (taxes) being less than expenses (cost of government programs). Increasing revenue is wildly unpopular for obvious reasons, so cutting expenses is the talk of the day. What do you think is the core function(s) of the federal government, and what should be cut?

too me, it seems the federal government wastes to much time with issues that could be handled at a local level. Seatbelt laws, banning four loko, baseball, etc.

That's a pretty broad question. There are many levels of government of this country, and there are even foreign governments to consider. Broadly speaking, I see the functions of governments are to provide for defense, internal peace and justice, to regulate commerce so we can trust what we're dealing with, and to promote the common good such as building roads to promote travel and transportation.

I think the Constitution covers it pretty well. Problem is there are way to many people (politicians) trying to interpret it for their own gain. Public servitude should be an attainable privilege for all who wish it, not only those who can buy it.

The primary purpose of any government is to develop and enforce standards the allow humans to live together with a minimum of violent disruption.

These standards form the framework of our society and allow multiple priorities and opinions to co-exist.

By its very nature and by necessity government is repressive.
