Sorry Pole Dancing is NOT a sport.

There is no High school pole dancing leagues, there is not college pole dancing leagues. there is no national ranking body that I can find. There is no international ranking body that sets rules and safety regulations. Therefor it is NOT a sport.

We used to put on life jackets or sit in big inner tubes and run rapids.

We thought it was pretty sporty at the time, even without any leagues or a bloody stupid ranking body.

To me, anything that gets a body moving can be considered a sport.

I draw the line at stuff like golf, poker and snooker.

Hey, I was a tournament snooker player in the 70's. It takes a lot of skill.

Now those dancing horses at the olympics, that is not a sport.

One of my best buddies had a 6 x 12 Brunswick table in his basement.

We played snooker there every night for years on end. His parent were saints.

I still love that game.

And with soccer, you need no-doz. What a boring game.

Everyone is entitled to create their own definition of what a sport is since there is no real clear definition. Trying to claim that an activity can only be labeled as a sport if there is an established governing body for that activity is one way, but I respectfully disagree with you.

Women who currently compete in pole dancing have considered changing the name of this sport so people who cannot broaden their minds will accept it, but then again, would they really accept it? Probably not. It was also agree that there really isn't a name to describe it better. Vertical dance was an alternative, but didn't really work either, so for now we continue to call it pole dancing. We are ok with people who do not want to think of us as participating in a sport. We don't care what you think of us or what label you want to use for us.

Women who compete in pole dancing today train hard and are more athletic and fit than many who people who compete in games you label as sports. Women who pole dance competitively do it for themselves and because they love the art of dance and athleticism required. Women who compete in pole dancing today do NOT flaunt themselves in strip clubs and just walk around a pole to be sexy and turn pigs, I mean men, on.

Here is the definition from Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport

And websters

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sport

Maybe someday the Olympic committe will recognize it too. When it does, those of you who don't personally choose to recognize it as a sport don't have to watch it. The rest of us will.

I agree with everything mtngirl and samfloor said.

I think we're getting hung up on semantics.

Pole dancing is a lot more sport like than golf imo, for instance.
