I have an old G1 that is now rooted and running 2.2 Froyo (Cyanogenmod). 2.2 definitely brought new life to the phone. IMO - Android is a bit more techy (complicated?) than Apple's iOS but the Apple product seems more polished . I have an iPad that runs a version of iOS3. I use my G1 to WiFi tether to the iPad so I don't have to pay for another data service contract. The iPad is great, but if I had to pick an OS it would be Android.
I just saw where Android recently became the most popular phone OS in terms of number of phones on the market.
i completely agree with your summation of the andrroid and ios operating systems. i would like to have an i hpone, but i cant wait for my contract to fully expire (another year) i dont think my phone will make it. besides its sounding like the whole iphone verizon thing is coming to a head, so maybe next year when i am eligible for a new phone again, a verizon iphone will be availible....

well, i bit the bullet and snagged a droidx. i'm scared it's going to eat my soul. so far cool things ive noticed:
takes amazing video (720p)!
it has a function to type what you say into a text. i know it seems redundant, but it really is a life saver when you're driving. pretty dang accurate too.
it's huge. im not sure how i feel about it's size, but its defiantly substantial.
the browser is very fast and extremly easy to use. i would say its better than the iphone.

I like the looks of the evo and the sound of 4g speeds. But In my area sprint SUCKS just about as bad as AT&T. I have to hang out my office window to get 1 GSM bar my office mate has a Verizon and has full power 3g with her phone. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
