I have friends going down to Del Rio today for New Years and I have heard a lot of buzz about the border and how dangerous it is at the moment. I'm wondering how safe it is lately, better, worse? Just curious. Might be a dumb question. Thanks for your input!
We're being told it isn't, stay away. No reason to go. The border violence has been escalating substantially in the last year, it's already spilling over the border, and all the border states are having hard time controlling it.

Tell your friend to come to El Paso first.
The cool thing about El Paso this days is watching a real modern day Mexican wild west show with state of the art weapons from the comfort of EL Paso.
If he is lucky he may see the latest hood ornaments on top of parked black cars along the Rio Grande.
There are a lot of scary things happening down there right now. May be safer after the drug cartel wins the war. That being said, we went across to Progresso, Mexico about 4mo ago without any problems.

I spend lots of time along the border. My brother is in the Border Patrol. Stay on the US side.

At least one Mexican gunman fired a high-powered rifle across the border at four U.S. road workers Thursday in an isolated ghost town east of Fort Hankock, Hudspeth County sheriff's officials said.
The bullets did not injure the four men.

Heard about that. Just another reason to stay away from the border.
