Sure, I moved West to Oregon 6 years ago and now I live in a northern rainforest. The climate is mild and wet but things are growing here year round. I'm 66 so I'm not working.

I don't know your city but I find it easier learning about new areas with the insights of someone familiar with the area.

You have an international beer festival which should interest the home brewers in the forum.

When I was in China in 2007 the locals would order beer at the bar 12 bottles at a time. The beer was cool but not cold. If you wanted cold beer you asked for it and they had it but the locals perfer to drink it cool. Seemed it was this way every where we went.

I've never seen Chinese beer in the States. It might exist but I think it would upset some who prefer not noticing WalMart is the same thing. With 39 micro breweries I'm betting Portland is well aware of this festival. Cool is preferable to warm.

I was told when I was in China that when the Germans had a presence there they had quite a few breweries making pilsner beer. When the Germans left the Chinese carried on with the beer making. I can't remember the brand that I found that I liked while I was there but I did find a beer there that tasted alot like Coors.

You called it correctly. Qingdao is an old port city with a German history so I'm certain the beer making tradition was helped by that fact.

We can get TsingTao in the provincially run liquor stores up here, and pretty well most Chinese restaurants serve it. But then again our provincial government is notoriously socialistic, so that may explain the availability of Chinese beer and us being the highest taxed jurisdiction in North America.

Funny how a few Chinese chops on a beer label will turn people off but they have no problem with Made in China labels on everything else they buy.

At least beer is ephemeral. It's here one day and often gone the same day. It's not like the Made in China towels and rugs and bedding and clothes and tools and ........

After WW II a man working for AT&T developed a theory of quality control in manufacturing. Big US companies didn''t want to hear it but the Japanese did. Today there is a statue of W. Edwards Deming in Japan and that fact isn't lost on the Chinese. They will (and already are) learning real value added quality and it will improve as they move beyond Walmart.
