Fun and free in Virginia

What are some of the fun and free things you have found to do in Virginia?

Of course the last time I was there with my girl friend at the time now wife, we had just watched The Blair Witch and there was no way she was going to get out of the Jeep to go hiking....but it was a nice drive anyways :lol

rivers and lakes - i live on the water most of the summer.
canoe, kayak, fish, swim. I know some of that isn't totally free if you need a boat, or fishing license, but in the long run, its really inexpensive.

Also hiking and primitive camping - the western part of the state is full of national forest thats open to the public

GW National Forest is free versus SNP which has a fee. Hiking stores sell George Washington National Forest Maps.

I travel a lot and if there is a college - find an independent coffee shop and you can always find out about fun and free stuff.
