VA Building Codes

I'm debating constructing some building on my property, any advice on the building codes? I've heard that they can be a bear. Anyone know how they compare to TN or other state building codes?

Building codes are based on your county rules. I recommend going to your county's website and checking for building permits. There should be contact information to ask questions.

Depends highly on where you live.

Northern VA sucks and the inspectors are incredibly strict. Richmond is kind of a pita as well, most the rural areas aren't bad.

In stafford you have to have a permit to patch drywall in your house, build a deck, and look corsseyed at your other wall.

So check with the county first.

Most localities have good resources on their websites, sometimes even there code book which can give you the actual requirements.....not the ones that the person at the county thinks are there.

code may be strict, good in the end

hi. may seem like a hassle when you're starting out.
nothing worse than a shoddy or dangerous job
by an unlicensed contractor. be sure and get lien releases
before the final payment. make sure the subs are paid
too or you might be responsible. happy housing!

any advice regarding mold and general dampness after the ice and rain?

Does the government help (Winchester Area) with any of this?
