I am quite familiar with that decision. It is the only one that could be made under the circumstances. The physical plant requires $100 million in maintence, and the area where it is located has been bleeding population for years, especially among the college aged group.

WVU has invested millions trying to keep it afloat, but has had its state appropriations reduced by 32% during the past 7 years, a whopping $90 million per year, and is faced with the situation of also having to deal with the higher education needs of Beckley. There was insufficient funding available to do both, so a difficult choice had to be made. Making matters worse is the fact that the state has poured tens of millions of dollars into creating programs that competed with those available at Montgomery at Marshall, located just 50 miles on the other side of Charleston while they increased appropriations for Marshall by 8% during the same time frame although Marshall is serving fewer students now than they did in 2007.

All of these factors combined have forced the decision to close the campus at Montgomery.
