North Central West Virginia (especially the Morgantown area), The Potomac Highlands, The Eastern Panhandle, and historic Wheeling and Oglebay Park are great reasons to visit West Virginia. Those areas are loaded with history, awesome scenery, and many things to do and they have nice amenities for visitors.
Visit the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, go whitewater rafting on the Cheat River and hike, bike, and rock climb in gorgeous Coopers Rock State Forest while overlooking the beautiful Cheat River Canyon, eat lunch along the Mon River in Morgantown at Mountain State Brewery, go to the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, see the Green Bank Observatory with the world's largest radio telescope, see the world's best municipal part at Oglebay and take the children to the zoo while you are there, tour Victorian Wheeling, and drive down West Virginia Route 2 as far as Parkersburg and visit Blennerhasset Park.
You could spend an entire week in the northern half of the state with every imaginable activity and not have the speed traps that you might encounter in the southern half, or feel as though you just stepped into a family feud.
