In history of warfare, there has only been one sure way of testing the power of a new weapon ? in the battlefield. The Union Army found it this way when they successfully confirmed the superiority of the then literal groundbreaking weapon, the rifled cannon.
The Pulaski National Monument in Savannah, Georgia was the testing site upon which the full brunt of this new weapon was unleashed. During the American Civil War in 1862, the Union Army cannons bombarded this brick fort. The success of the weapon made brick forts obsolete in an instant.
The Fort Pulaski is currently under the management of the National Park service. The area around the fort is teeming with wildlife. The salt marshes are home to several animals, including 11 Protected Species. Some of these animals are American Oystecatcher, Wilson?s Plover and loggerhead sea turtle.
