Atlanta?s sleek-looking modernist museum, the High Museum of Art, houses the city?s finest collections of 18th and 19th century artworks. Strategically located at Peachtree Street, Atlanta?s so-called art district, this museum complex is a work of art in itself; it was designed by renowned architect Richard Meier in 1983.

The museum is one of the most visited museums in the world. One of its famous pieces of art is a Rodin sculpture named ?The Shade? which adorns the museum grounds. The sculpture was a goodwill gift of the French government in memory of the victims of the June 3, 1962 plane crash, which killed several Atlanta art patrons.

The museum holds more than 11,000 works of art including classic and contemporary American art, decorative arts, photography, and European art. The elite list of painters whose works are on display include Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Claude Monet, Clarence John Laughlin, and Chuck Close.
