Black Beach’s southern part is well known to be the most powerful surf breaks in Southern California. Waves are from the Scripps Canyon, an underwater canyon in San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park. With Black Beach forceful large waves, it is only suitable for advanced surfer. It is also the first legal nude beach back in 1974. The ordinance was repeal in 1977 due to the votes of those who opposed nude beaches. 55% was the gathered votes to overturn the nudity in Black Beach. Traditionally the beach is acknowledged as a clothing optional beach; it is tolerated and managed by the state park.


Black Beach does not attract large crowds, especially in south side. The beach is perfect for walking and jogging, scuba is not recommended due to rough surf conditions. Visitors should also be aware of the unstable cliffs. There are access trails that should be considered in walking the cliffs. Beach regulations are alcohol is prohibited as well as no fire pits and open fire with in the area.
