The Kahanu Garden, also known as the National Tropical Botanical Garden, is officially listed as a historic site in the national register. The natural sanctuary encompasses 500 acres of wildlife and is considered as an ancient guardian to the Pi?ilanihale Heiau, an equally ancient temple, having stood in its site for hundreds of years.

One of the most interesting attractions found at the garden would be its collection of breadfruit trees, which is a veritable forest of its own. The garden?s collection of the Pacific food crop is acknowledged as the largest in the world and boasts of over 130 species originating from twenty different tropical islands.

Equally interesting is the Canoe Garden, wherein vistors may marvel at the many plants that early Polynesian settlers introduced to natives of the island and which later helped the native culture of Maui Nui to flourish.
