This national monument is famous for containing the country?s biggest number of Hagerman Horse fossils, with the beds displaying thirty complete sets of horse fossils and other parts of over 200 different species of horses and other animals and plants. Fossilized specimens include those of the famous sabertooth, otter, mastodon, camel, ground sloth, peccary, and a dog with hyena-like features. All in all, the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument is considered as potential evidence for America being the putative origin of horses.

Besides the said findings above, the fossil beds also yield more than 3,000 fossils annually, which make it one of the world?s fossil-rich areas. For those who wish to visit the site, you are advised to drop by first at the National Park Service Visitor Centre, the nearest of which is located in Route 30.
