The Museum Association of Douglas County was established in 1984 as historical and decorative arts objects in the county were face with the threat of destruction and removal despite the existence of a historical society.*

With that, museum professionals were consulted for help in creating a constitution and other requirements required to establish the Museum. It also began the lookout for a suitable building where the artifacts could be stored and displayed. After a series of rejected structures, the Board of Trustees purchased the Ferchow building.

After a series of grants and donations, the Museum was remodelled. *It also paved the way for the community to show its collective effort and commitment to their county because the Ferchow building was in a state of disrepair when it was purchased.* Most of the work done on the building was done by volunteers.

In 1988-1992, during the remodelling process, the Douglas County Museum received county artifacts and it was able to hold bi-monthly educational programs.*

The collection of the Museum includes clothing and textiles, military, medical tools and equipment, decorative arts, library, manuscripts, and archives, and other artifacts related to the industries in the area.
