The Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area is a state park and recreation area in Kinmundy, Illinois. It is located 15 miles northeast of Salem.
Originally a 20-acre park, the Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area grew to its 3103 acres through time. 1150 acres of it are covered with forests of oak and hickory that surround a large manmade lake completed in 1963. The lake offers 18 miles of shoreline. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, fishing, boating, camping, hunting, hiking, horseback riding, and swimming at the site. The park is also home to the Sam Parr Biological Stations.
The Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area is named after Stephen Alfred Forbes, a world renowned natural scientist who made great contributions in the field of biology.
