The Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area is a state park and recreation area in Whittington, Illinois. It offers 3300 acres of area and offers access to the massive Rend Lake Reservoir.

Considered as the gateway to Southern Illinois’ largest outdoor playground, the Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area offers a great access to the 19,000-acre Rend Lake. Rend Lake was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1970 as a result of the damming of the Big Muddy River. The site was named after a former member of the Illinois House of Representative, Wayne Fitzgerrell who also became instrumental in the creation of the dam.

The Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area is best known for its recreational opportunities. It is perfect for water sports, picnicking, bird watching, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, boating, and water skiing among other things.
