The Des Moines Botanical Center is a 14-acre botanical expanse located right in the heart of Iowa and on the eastern territory of the Des Moines River. The area showcases a wide array of plants with their corresponding scientific names while providing multi-faceted services including community, recreational, and educational functions to its thousands of visitors.

The botanical center was conceptualized in 1929. The original plan was to create a flower greenhouse in one of Des Moines?s parks. The proposal was to aesthetically enhance the infrastructure?s perspective by surrounding it with gardens. Plans of erecting the botanical structure on the urban renewal zone of downtown was discussed all throughout the 1960s until the 70s. In 1939, the city acquired a greenhouse right on the western bank of the river. It was utilized for the display, as well as the production of various species of plants until the center was completed in December 15, 1979, more than 2 years after the construction commenced in October 1977.

The Des Moines Water Works is responsible for the management and operation of the center. Sustenance is generated both from private and public sources, including the city?s tax collection. Furthermore, support for the center are heaped from membership fees, contributions, memorials, grants, and fundraising activities conducted by the Friends of the Des Moines Botanical Center.

The Des Moines Botanical Center is an official affiliate of the American Public Gardens Association.
