This covered bridge probably catapulted the erstwhile unknown hobby of bridgehunting and bridge photography. It was featured in the film adaptation of “Bridges of Madison County” and cemented the county’s reputation for its beautiful covered bridges. This bridge is the Roseman Covered Bridge, which can be found crossing the Middle River in the town of Winterset in Madison County, Iowa.
Built in 1883 by Benton Jones, this 107-foot covered bridge was featured in the novel “Bridges of Madison County”. The movie of the same title showed this bridge as the place where the character Francesca Johnson (played by Meryl Streep) was asked for directions by Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood). This bridge is also a popular spot during the town’s “Covered City Festival”, and in local folklore as a haunted place where a scream of a dead man can be heard.
