Located in Lake Scott State Park, the El Quartelejo Ruins is the remnants of the only known ancient Indian pueblo in Kansas. It is believed that the site has once been a bustling village around the 1600s, but what happened to them later is still being debated upon.

Discovered in 1898 by archaeologists, the El Quartelejo was said to be unknown amongst explorers. The site has shown the experts that there was once a seven-room structure and a series of shallow ditches. Further excavations allowed researchers to find more artifacts.

El Quartelejo Ruins was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The building of the state park soon took place afterwards. The outline of the ruins got restored, but the weather continuously damages the site.
