Found in Hamilton County, Kansas, Fort Aubrey is an old fortification built around the mid 1800s by the US Army. It was initially a temporary resting place for soldiers who are travelling along the route and was originally an intermittent camp upon creation.

In 1864, the camp was given the name Camp Wynkoop, after Major Edward W. Wynkoop, Fort Lyon?s commander. A stage station was built and was abandoned later on, with the needs of abandoning the area to avoid frequent Indian attacks.

It was only in 1865 that the permanent Fort Aubrey was built in the site. It was closed again, less than a year later and was never used for military purposes again. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
