The Fort Larned National Historic Site was established in the 1960s to preserve what once was Fort Larned. This fortification was built around the late 1850s to early 1860s so the troops can protect the traffic that passes through the Santa Fe Trail from Indian attacks. It initially operated under the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Composed of nine historic buildings, the Fort Larned National Historic Site is one of the best-preserved government buildings from the era. It operated for nineteen years, from 1859 to 1878 and stood as a witness to various historical events that took place in the era.
Today, the Fort Larned National Historic Site can be visited daily, all throughout the year. The admission is free, and it offers various events regularly.
