The museum started in 1966 at the bequest of Dr. Lowell Holmes, an anthropology professor at the university. Initially known as Museum of Man, the institution grew over the years. Its collections of important cultural artifacts from all over the world became the museum?s main attractions.

The museum is notable for leading an expedition into Western New Guinea in 2001. The museum?s staff collected around 950 pieces of Asmat tribal art.
