The Nicodemus National Historic Site pays tribute to a town that is dedicated to an all Black race. It was started by African Americans who were known to have fought during the Civil War. It served as their symbol of their freedom and courage along with their unbeatable spirit that is true of the African Americans.
The historical site is the representation of how the African Americans were very much involved during the western expansion and eventually to the story of their settlement in the Great Plains of the area. It is one of the oldest and known to be the few of the remaining black towns in the western side of the Mississippi River. The site is supported by the African American Experience Fund and the National Park Foundation.
