Located in Johnson County, Kansas, and operated by the Hercules Aerospace Company, the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant was a producer of smokeless powder and propellant. It was founded in 1914 under its original name, Sunflower Ordinance Works. It was then the largest smokeless powder manufacturing plant in the world.

During World War II, the company produced large amounts of propellants and provided the much needed ammunition for the United States. After the war the plant was placed on standby, it was taken over by the U.S. government for security and maintenance. Different operators took over by then to use the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant facilities for ammunition products. Today, the plant is closed out and continues to be a known landmark in Kansas.
