Situated in the Flint Hills Region of Kansas, you will find the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. This area was created in 1996 to preserve an area that was once a vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem. It is known that tallgrass prairie used to cover over 1 million squared kilometers in the North America. Sadly, all remains now is a meager 4 percent, most of which are found in this area.

This made the area very nationally significant. If not protected, the area could mean further decrease of the flora?s species. The National Park Service administers the area and is managed as a national park. The Nature Conservancy owns most of the land area, so they also have a say in running the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
