The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption is a historic church located in Covington, Kentucky. The Cathedral has been considered as a minor basilica in the United States and was established by Camillus Paul Maes, the third bishop of the Diocese of Covington, in 1894. The cathedral project was terminated in 1915 and remains incomplete to this day but exudes the same exterior as that of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption received the 2002 Preservation Award from the Cincinnati Preservation Association after the most recent renovations. The renovations done to the cathedral was spearheaded by the Conrad Schmitt Studios and included various tasks such as the cleaning of the cathedrals? stone ribs, walls and tracery. Artists working for the Studio also helped by providing plaster restoration for select faux stone paintings for the cathedral.

The interior of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption was modeled after the interiors of the Basilica of St. Denis in France. It is also adorned by murals coming from artist Frank Duveneck who was a Covington native. Cathedral visitors can also expect to see the first and the third largest rose windows in the world. It has also been raised to the status of minor basilica on December 8, 1953 by Pope Pius XII. This makes the cathedral one of 35 minor basilicas in the United States.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption guests can also check the Cathedral?s north transept window which holds the record of being the world?s largest church stained glass window which measures a total of 67 feet high and 24 feet wide. The image of presented in the stained glass hails from the early fifth century Ecumenical council of Ephesus.

There is no admission for the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and guests can even get guided tours detailing the rich history of the minor basilica.
