The Kentucky Down Under is an animal park located in Horse Cave, Kentucky. The park was opened by the husband and wife team of Bill and Judy Austin in 1990.

The park was originally named the Mammoth Onyx Cave when Bill Austin was still the manager. Austin?s grandfather had purchased the park in 1920 and initially featured small animals together with birds such as peacocks. In 1970 the park added the herd of American bison to attract more visitors followed by mammals? native in Australia during the 1990s. It was in the same decade that the Kentucky Caverns received another name change to what it is today, Kentucky Down Under.

The Australian native mammals that are taken care of in Kentucky Down Under include Rainbow Lorikeet, Papuan Frogmouth, Blue Tongue Skink, Kookabura, Emu and the Red Kangaroo.

Other attractions and activities that guests can also look for during their trip to Kentucky Down Under include the park?s aviaries ? Terra Rosella, Land of Lories and the Kentucky Down Under Bird Garden. The Terra Rosella aviary features Australian Finches and even hand feed colorful budgies.

Visitors can also take a 45 minute tour of the famous Kentucky Cavern which was discovered in 1799 but was opened to the public in 1922. Guests can marvel at the natural rock formations that can be seen when taking the tour. The Kentucky Down Under also features Camp Corroboree, a 45-minute exhibition giving more details about Aboriginal culture.

Kids and adults can also spend some time in the Outback Walkabout and the woolshed. The Outback Walkabout is a 30 minute guided tour which brings guests closer to Australian mammals such as kangaroos, wallabies and even emus. The woolshed on the other hand helps kids experience life in a milking farm.
