The 135 acre Louisville Zoo currently displays more than 1,300 animals in several settings that represent the animal’s natural habitat. Also known as the Louisville Zoological Garden, the Louisville Zoo is located in Kentucky’s Poplar Level district. In 2006, the zoo has set an all-time record of yearly attendance of 810,546 visitors. The Louisville zoo was establish in 1969, on a piece of land purchased by the City from Ben Collin’s estate in 1960. Much of the money used for the funding came from the donation of James Graham Brown, a local philanthropist.
The Louisville Zoo is open all year round but is closed during Christmas, New Year’s Day, and on Thanksgiving. Accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and the American Association, Louisville Zoo’s mission is to better the bond between people and our planet.
