Also known as the Purple People Bridge, the Newport Southbank Bridge is a pedestrian bridge crossing the Ohio River and connecting Cincinnati, Ohio and Newport, Kentucky. It was built in 1872, under the name, “Newport and Cincinnati Bridge”. It was later renamed the L&N Railroad Bridge and carried a street car, automobiles, and pedestrians across the water.

In 1987, the Newport Southbank Bridge was closed to railroad traffic. It closed to automobile traffic in 2001, as it was already deteriorating and becoming a dangerous place to carry heavy weights. It was restored in 2001 and was painted purple.

For a time, bridge climbs were offered on the Newport Southbank Bridge. However, it didn’t really take off, so the idea was shut down in 2007.
