Kentucky’s Old State Capitol is a historic building in Frankfort, Kentucky, best known for serving as the Commonwealth Capitol of Kentucky from 1830 to 1910. It was the first building designed by the popular Lexington, Kentucky architect, Gideon Shyrock.

The Old State Capitol is in Greek Revival Style architecture. Shyrock chose the motif to link the state to the democracy that ancient Greece is best known for. He fashioned the frontage of the building after the Temple of Minerva Polias in Priene. It also features a very popular self-supporting stone stairway with a domed lantern. The building was also the site of the assassination of William Goebel in the year 1900.

The Old State Capitol now serves as a museum and Kentucky Historical Society’s home since the 1920s.
