The whole house was designed by notable American architect James Gallier in 1860. The building served as the architect?s home for his entire life. Another notable work by Gallier is the French Opera House, also in the same area.

The house now stands as a museum dedicated to Gallier?s life and works. The house has since been restored to its former condition during the 19th century.
