The Louisiana History Museum is a historical museum located in Alexandria, Louisiana. The museum, which houses a total of 50 different displays, was established to preserve, collect, interpret and promote understand about the rich culture and history of Alexandria and the rest of the state of Louisiana. The museum holds the biggest number of historical artifacts in the entire state of Louisiana and has been placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Louisiana History Museum was established by Angelique Stafford ?Gic? Kraushaar in the early 1970s to help chronicle the unique history of the state of Louisiana as well as detail the early beginnings of Central Louisiana. The museum shares the same building as the Alexandria Genealogical Library and was once the Alexandria Public Library in 1907. Visitors should also note that the admission to the museum is free.

Current displays and exhibits in the museum include a gallery of famous figures in Louisiana History, the Louisiana Purchase, the Colonial Louisiana, the American Revolution in Louisiana, the war between the North and the South, the Louisiana timber industry, famous central Louisiana plantations and buildings and even the works of O.K. Allen and Huey Long.

Other topics featured in the museum include the life of the natives of Louisiana under the rule of the English, the Spanish and the French, a model for the Stern Wheel Steam Ship ?Red River,? famous politicians from Central Louisiana, famous Central Louisiana plantations and buildings and a special exhibit detailing why there are no dinosaur bones excavated in Louisiana.

An important part of Central Louisiana history focuses on the purchase of Louisiana with different exhibits honoring the event. The Louisiana History Museum even preserved a 200 year old New York Herald paper that details the purchase of Louisiana.
