The Palmetto Island State Park is a state park and recreation area in Abbeville, Louisiana. It is a fairly recent addition to the Louisiana state parks system, being only opened in October 2010 due to budget constraints and other issues.
Touted as the best place to get the ?real south Louisiana outdoors experience?, the Palmetto Island State Park showcases a great natural setting, exhibiting an ?oasis in the middle of a farmland?. Its 1299 acres are mostly composed of palmetto trees that form a dense understory and a coastal bottomland hardwood forest.
Visitors of the Palmetto Island State Park can enjoy birding, wildlife viewing, fishing, boating, camping, and swamp walks at the site. There are also six vacation cabins at the site and a Visitor Center complex.
