The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is an art gallery located in Shreveport, Louisiana and was established by the Richard W. Norton Foundation founded by Norton?s son Richard W. Norton Jr. and the oil baron?s wife. The gallery boasts a number of art collections collected and amassed by both of Norton?s wife and son.
The original building for the R.W. Norton Art Gallery followed the foundation?s plans to the letter when it opened in 1966 which featured a total of 24 exhibition rooms, however due to the increasing number of artworks that the museum encounters and preserves, expansions had to be made. The art gallery has had a total of two different renovations and expansions. The first expansion occurred at the south wing which debuted in 1990 followed by another expansion on the north wing area in 2003.
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery has an extensive amount of artworks that has been added to the museum?s permanent collection. The collection includes over 400 different paintings from a hundred artists and spans different eras starting from the Renaissance all the way to the modern iconoclast and contemporary neo-realist eras.
The collection also includes hundreds of sculptures including maquettes, miniatures and life-sizes pieces made of different materials including bronze, silver, marble and wood. There are also several tapestries present in the R.W. Norton Art Gallery dating back as far as the 16th century. The same tapestry was even used in the palace of a French monarch. Aside from artworks, there are also different pottery displays in the gallery. These potteries include porcelain, pressed and blown glass and even 19th century silver.
Visitors can also spend the quiet afternoons in the azalea gardens together with 15,000 other plants outside the Norton art gallery. The garden has been landscaped to appeal to guests and also includes small things such as a gentle winding path together with a small stream with a pond and benches beside azalea beds.
There is no admission charge for the art gallery but visitors are required to follow the rules and guidelines as well as the schedule. The gallery is open from Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and opens at 1:00 pm to 5:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
