The Maine Maritime Museum was founded in 1962. It is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the materials that are related to Maine’s maritime history, heritage, and culture.

The Museum, formed by residents of Bath, started out as the Marine Research Society of Bath. It changed its name to Maine Maritime Museum in 1975. Little by little, it expanded through the addition of buildings and other facilities.

Today, the Museum offers fascinating exhibits displaying art and artifacts, interactive areas for its visitors, a historic shipyard housing 5 of the original 19th century buildings, a Victorian-era shipyard owners home, an active waterfront, a life-size sculptural representation of the largest wooden sailing vessel, and a scenic campus on the bank of the Kennebec River.
