Completed in 1754, the Old Fort Western is recognized as a National Historical Landmark as well as being New England’s oldest existing fort building that’s still made entirely from wood. It is one of the best places to visit for those who yearn for more than a glimpse of how pioneers lived in the early days. The fort presents a rich and interesting history: during the American Revolution, the fort served as Benedict Arnold’s site of assault against Quebec while in the mid 18th century, its garrisons were secured and protected by none other than James Howard.

Also available at the site are the family estate and store owned by Howard, both of which were built in the mid 1700’s as well.
