Believed to have been built in the 1870, during the period when covered bridges were the common trend in construction, the Sunday River Covered Bridge is one of the most popular of its sort in the state of Maine. It has also been called the Artists Covered Bridge as it is one of the most photographed and painted bridge in history.

Maine used to have 120 covered bridges. Only 9 of them remain today, and the Sunday River Covered Bridge is one of them. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Sunday River Covered Bridge spans 87 feet long and is now closed to traffic, having been replaced in 1958 by a concrete bridge was built downstream
