If you are a fan of the 19th century American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, or a historic architecture buff, you will find the late great poet?s childhood home a real visual and educational treat.

The Wadsworth Longfellow House is located in Portland, Maine. The historic house is under the administration of the Maine Historical Society, who also oversees the Historical Society Museum housed inside the building. The house is notable for being the oldest preserved structure in the peninsula of Portland. American Revolutionary General Pele Wadsworth built and lived in this Federal-styled house, the first full-brick house in the area. Henry Wadsworth was born in 1807 and spent his first 35 years in the house.

For the house?s literary importance, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The place is open for guided public tours.
