Hagerstown, Maryland was founded by a German immigrant named Jonathan Hager, who bought 200 acres of land between the Allegheny Mountains and Blue Ridge areas. This was in 1739 and he called the area Hager?s Fancy. This is why today?s Hagerstown still continues to celebrate their German heritage through one of their festivals known as the Augustoberfest.

Augustoberfest was first held in the mid 1990s as a way to commemorate the foreign roots of the city. It is also a way to support and fund the exchange student systems of the area with its sister city, Wesel, Germany.

The festivities usually happen around the end of August every year. It features a series of events, with various activities that the whole family will surely enjoy.
