Measuring of at least 100 acres of watershed land, the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is the home to the bald cypress. It is the most northernmost site where these trees naturally grow.

Owned by the Nature Conservancy group, it is the very first preserve owned by this environmental organization in Maryland. It was bought in 1957 and called the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary.

Aside from the bald cypress trees, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is also a sanctuary of numerous frogs, songbirds, and wildflower species. It was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1965.

Safety precautions are noted to visitors before going to Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, though, as possibilities of getting bitten by ticks and mosquitoes are high while in the area.
