The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge was made in 1933 serving as a home to numerous migratory birds. The refuge measures about 26,000 acres which features predominantly a tidal marsh along with freshwater ponds, forests and other mixed evergreens. The wildlife refuge is about 12 miles from Cambridge. It was originally a haven for geese and ducks that migrate along the lines of the Atlantic Flyway.

It is also noted to be a comforting refuge for troubled species like the American Bald Eagle, the peregrine falcon and many more. This makes the refuge unique in its own sense since it serves as host to a huge number of Delmarva squirrels. The place is also open for camping and lodging purpose of some visitors.
