Although Burnside Bridge may seem small being only 12 feet wide and 125 feet long, it has still become a part of the Antietam National Battlefield, south of Hagerstown and near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was constructed in 1836 using granite and limestone as per John Weaver?s design and crosses the Antietam Creek.

Burnside Bridge was originally named as Lower Bridge, but it was renamed after Major General Ambrose Burnside, who led the fateful and successful battle during the Civil War where the Union troops managed to cross the bridge after three hours despite the advantage of the Confederates on the other side.

Vehicular traffic is now prohibited along the Burnside Bridge, but pedestrians are still allowed to cross it. It is also the most photographed Civil War bridges.
