Hiking and camping are staple recreational activities that most state parks offer. However, a state park in Maryland adds another exciting activity to its repertoire ? fossil hunting.

The Calvert Cliff State Park in Lusby in the county of Calvert, Maryland is popular for its fossil-lined cliffs and shores. This state park is situated on Chesapeake Bay. The park?s main feature is the Calvert Formation, a rock formation formed from the sediments deposited by a coastal ocean that covered the area back then. It is estimated to be around 14-19 million years old.

The park is popular among fossil collectors and ?rockhounds? where they can scour the shores for fossils and other rocks. Due to increasing dangers of destruction, the cliffs are no longer open to public access. Other activities within the park are camping, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, picnicking, retreats, and nature watching.
