The Chesapeake Children?s Museum began in 1992 when both child development experts and parents of the local community joined forces to provide the town with kid-friendly activities for its most important celebrations, which include the Maryland Seafood Festival, the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, and the Quiet Waters Parks Earth Day. The events booths that the group created for each occasion was always extremely popular, and this eventually led to the decision of creating an actual children?s museum for Annapolis.

In 1994, the Chesapeake Children?s Museum was incorporated and the Odenton Elementary School served as its first (temporary) home. Exhibits were put up in the school?s classrooms and activities were provided in both the school?s computer lab and art room.

In 2001, the CCM?s long-term lease for the WYRE Building was approved and after an eight-month period of renovation, the museum resumed operation the next year.
