Clara Barton was an American teacher, nurse, humanitarian, and founder of the American Red Cross. Her steadfast dedication to help everyone in times of great need earned her much respect and admiration during her lifetime. She was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her role during the American Civil War. After the war, she was successful in the establishment of the American Red Cross.
Her final home in Glen Echo, Maryland was declared a National Historic Site in 1974. Tourists who visit her home would discover the life Clara Barton had during her times. The three-storey building has 30 rooms containing several items and medical supplies for war and natural disasters, early Red Cross papers, and Clara Barton’s personal belongings. The house also served as the headquarters of American Red Cross during the 1900s.
