Located in the southern portion of the town of Big Pool near the Potomac River is the Fort Frederick State Park. Moreover, the park surrounds the restored Fort Frederick a fortification built by the colony of Maryland in 1756-57. This fort was designed to primarily to become a trusted shelter for settlers it is obvious in its construction that it is not designed to withstand artillery attacks.
The fort witness history unfold so many times that it was declared a National Historic Landmark on November 7, 1973. For a time the fort was used as a prisoner camp, a garrison, and even to a point of being abandoned at one point. It is in 1922 that the state of Maryland acquired the property to assign it as the first state park in the state.
