Harmony Hall is an 18th century mansion located on Fort Washington, Maryland. Built on 62.5-acre open pasture land adjacent to Potomac River, the house is considered to be a two-story 18th century Georgian country house, mostly built of red brick. An open marvelous view from Harmony Hall to Broad Creek and the Potomac River augments the architectural ambiance of the house. The mansion architecturally ranks as one of the great early plantation and colonial houses of Maryland and was originally named Battersea. Built in 1769, by Enoch Magruder, a wealthy landowner and tobacco businessman, its location was strategically chosen as it was close to the Potomac, which during that time was the most convenient and primary means of transportation and shipping.

In 1786, the mansion was bequeathed to Enoch Magrauder?s daughter, Sarah, which during that time was married to Colonel William Lyles. It was then in 1792 that the mansion was renamed to Harmony Hall by Walter Dulaney who rented the house for a year. In 1892, the Harmony Hall farm was bought by Robert Stein, a well-known explorer and linguist and in 1929, Charles Collins, a historian, lawyer and preservationist purchased Harmony Hall and completed various extensive restorations and built additions that are still visible until today. In 1966, Collins? widow, Sue Spenser Collins, sold the property to the National Park Service and was listed as on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 1985, Frank Calhuon invested more than $1 million to lease the mansion and lived there, but was asked to leave in 1999 by the National Park Service.

Harmony Hall?s rich landscape will offer visitors many opportunities to learn and explore the area?s rich natural and cultural histories. Today, Harmony Hall is closed to the public as it is undergoing major repairs to restore it to its original resplendence.
